It’s got to be Belle’s beautiful Yellow Ball Gown. What little girl doesn’t fantasize of being a beautiful Princess dancing in the Ballroom of an enchanted Castle? So as they see the animated classic movie it is just a natural that they long to have a costume to project their childhood fantasies onto. They see a character in Belle that they maybe like in their ordinary lives (from a little town or at least from very modest means) and they see how quickly circumstances can be changed. In other words the story line is a very plausible scenario. Little girl goes looking for lost father and winds up in a storybook castle with objects that come to life.

On Halloween, a kid’s imagination is brightly lit with fantasies of dressing up as a pirate, a la Brad Pitt, or perhaps the loveliest little angel. You will need it when all those little trick-or-treators come around. Trust me; they will be itching for some heavy duty sugar. I can’t guarantee what they will do to you if you’re lacking. Therefore, you need that candy supply! Oh, and don’t forget an awesome costume. Whether it be a superman, clown, batman, vampire, mummy, or Frankenstein costume is irrelevant. Just have one on. This occasion requires a little spirit.

It was a work thing. Yeah, you know; one of those. Nevertheless, it was a fun and memorable experience. I saw a little mermaid costumes there that practically blew everyone else’s get-up away. This thing looked so realistic. Just to be clear, I’m talking about Frankenstein’s monster here. Not Victor himself. Many people make this mistake. Anyway, the high-end Frankenstein costume was outstanding. I had to wonder who did this guy’s make-up. It must have cost him a fortune. Now that is what Halloween is all about. He’s in the zone.

First of all, if you’re all wearing masks, make sure that you can see out of them so that you are aware of traffic and other hazards.

Secondly, are those mouse halloween costumes too dark? If so, take a torch or glow stick with you so that you can be seen. Reflective armbands are also a great idea.

Thirdly, if you must carry candles, check that your costume material is not flammable (modern outfits are usually flame retardant).

Finally, check that there are no trailing pieces of material on your costume. You don’t want to fall over – it can be dangerous and you’re going to look a fool (well, you are trying to scare somebody, after all!).

Only about a week or so left until the day when all bets are off. Who’s ready for the ghosts, goblins and spooks to emerge from the darkness? I know I am. This is the best day of the year if you ask me. Frolicking through the neighborhood in search of treats! What in the world is better than that? Okay, so I don’t exactly carry around a sack, but I take my daughter to dozens of doorsteps. Believe it or not, it’s actually more fun than when I trick-or-treated as a child. You want to know what else? One of the greatest aspects of this holiday is the attire.
Kids often have trouble with antiquated language, such as all those ‘thees’ and ‘thous’ not used in modern language. Some chapters and, indeed whole books, were so laden with these phrases, that it became difficult to focus your attention and discern what was being said. This factor unfortunately results in kids feeling that this is not a living history and contributes to some kids coming to believe that the Bible is just a series of stories someone made up. This failure to make the Bible come alive is a shame. One way to remedy this is to put on regular seasonal Sunday school plays, making authentic Biblical costumes and stage sets which simulate life in Biblical times.

I prefer more inventive fancy dress than the tired old subjects. It doesn’t take much imagination to throw a doctors and nurses or a cowboys and Indians party. There’s a good episode of Frasier in which Frasier hosts a party at which the guests are invited to come in the guise of their hero.
In short, she wanted that belle costumes so she too could be Belle for a night. I was all over the idea. What father doesn’t want to see their daughter become a princess? Once we arrived home with the sparkly attire, my little girl couldn’t wait to put it on. Kids love their costumes and they wear them as often as possible, before and even after Halloween night has past.
