House Break Your Dog Or A Potty for Dogs?

If you are going to house train your dog you first need to be patient and second have the ability to follow a schedule. By following a schedule your puppy will respond better to you because they will get use to doing the same thing over and over again daily and learn to behave the way you want them too!

The first thing you need to figure out is what your dog’s limit is for holding themselves. Take notes daily for a few days and notice the pattern your dog has between eating and eliminating. Now add or subtract 15 to 30 minutes and this will be the dog’s comfort zone. This is the length of time that the pup can hold their urine after they went to the potty.

In most cases the puppy will have to go to the potty after they drink, eat, sleep or have been playing. Dogs need to go outside to go to the bathroom around three to five times a day, unless they have been drinking an excessive amount of water.

If you like to walk your dog the best thing to do with them is not to return home until the dog goes to the potty. Make sure if you do you are prepared to stay outside until he does. It may take some time but you have to be patient. If you give up and bring him back in before he goes, then you may be faced with an accident before you get him outside again.

When you dog does go to potty you want to reward him with praise and maybe a treat, make a big deal out of it, this will make him want to please you more. This will help to mold their behavior, it will reinforce it because of the attention that you give him. If you wait too long to praise them it may be too late and won’t be effective.

For prevention and to keep him from finding spots in the house close the doors to rooms that have carpeting or rugs. Dog’s love to use rugs and carpets, they prefer them to eliminate on.

When the time comes that your puppy has an accident, then use some kind of a pet odor neutralizer to prevent any odor. The reason is puppy’s or dog’s will sniff around until the find the spot they used the last time they eliminated themselves. But a word of caution do not use ammonia based cleaners because they break down into urea, which of course is part of urine.

Of course you can avoid all the hassle by purchasing an indoor dog potty. They are great because they are easy to clean, they have a spray that will attract the puppy to the doggie potty.
